Shalom Food Pantry in New York's Capital Region
Shalom!
The Shalom Food Pantry is a volunteer-led initiative of Capital Chabad based in Delmar. It was created in response to growing food insecurity in the Albany area and provides healthy food packages to individuals and families experiencing financial hardship. While its roots are in serving the local Jewish community, the pantry welcomes anyone who needs assistance, regardless of background or faith. Their mission emphasizes something that often gets overlooked: helping people while protecting their privacy and dignity
Many people seeking assistance are working full-time, caring for children or aging parents, navigating medical expenses, or simply trying to make it through a difficult season. Asking for help can already feel vulnerable. Organizations that reduce stigma make that first step a little easier
A Community Built by Volunteers
One of the most inspiring aspects of the Shalom Food Pantry is that it runs largely through volunteers; community members help package groceries, deliver food to neighbors who cannot travel, organize food drives, and collect donations from the Regional Food Bank. Even teenagers regularly participate in packing and delivery events, making community service part of everyday life rather than something reserved for special occasions
This reflects an old Jewish idea that repairing the world—Tikkun Olam—is rarely accomplished through one grand gesture
