Club Calima NYC Community Summit 2025
Solena Aguilar
Solena is a textile artist foraging for fabric in New York City and creating with their community to bring joy and vibrancy in accessible areas.
Solena indulges in different pattern making practices in their work, drawing inspiration from their Nicaraguan ancestry.
Solena grew up creating quilts alongside their grandmother. They would rummage through materials to find color combinations previously undiscovered.
This cultivated a keen sense of curiosity for surprising textures and delicate patterns that now make up Solena’s work
Their art practice pinpoints hidden patterns that explore the joy of the material world. Following this developed devotion to color, Solena received their BFA in Art and Design from California Polytechnic State University.
In 2023 Solena brought together their love for patterns and community and created the bilingual children’s book “What do you need? / ¿Qué Necesitas?”
Surrounded by vibrant Latin American textiles, a curious tomato named Lorena learns about equity and mutual aid. This theme of mutual support and shared resources is central to Solena’s creative philosophy.
Their role as an Art Director and Designer for various organizations highlights their ability to merge creativity with social impact. Through exhibitions, public works, and collaborative projects, they continue to explore how textiles, storytelling, and shared spaces can foster connection and joy.
