Tropical Gothic is not simply “Gothic horror in Latin America.” It is horror transformed by climate, colonialism, inequality, and tropical modernity
Instead of foggy European castles, Tropical Gothic gives us:
- sugarcane plantations
- colonial mansions
- decaying urban wealth
- humid jungles
- neon nightlife
- political violence
- Catholic mysticism
- tropical sensuality
The genre often critiques elite society, inherited power, and the lingering ghosts of colonialism. Vampires become metaphors for oligarchies feeding on workers. Wealthy families hide monstrous secrets behind modern architecture and imported luxury
The horror is social as much as supernatural
